My thoughts on turning 57

weekly memo

I’m 57 today, which is honestly hard to believe.

Here’s what I wish my younger self knew about aging well.

You don’t need to diet your way to being smaller.

You need to move your body to build strength.  Muscle is the fountain of youth.

The number on the scale doesn’t mean anything.

It’s the number on the weights I can lift that matters and keeps me motivated.

You don’t need to restrict yourself to eating 1000 calories a day.

Over time, it takes a toll on your thyroid and metabolism.

I see food in a whole new light.  It’s fuel, not something to fear or restrict.

I understand how food keeps my brain sharp, my energy up, and my muscles fed.

Birth control doesn’t “fix” anything.

It masks the real problem.

Over time, it gives you leaky gut, nutrient deficiencies, and sets you up for autoimmune conditions.

Poor blood sugar and systemic inflammation will age you.

Glycation (caused by chronically elevated blood sugar) will degrade your collagen and elastin, leading to wrinkles and heart disease.

Your health is your wealth.

A well person wants many things.  A sick person only wants one.

Women’s bodies aren’t inherently broken, which is the overriding narrative in our culture.

Your body is highly intuitive.  Symptoms are the body's whisper asking for support.

People pleasing, fawning, over-apologizing, over-giving, coddling, and caretaking other able-bodied adults is harmful to you and those around you.

This is one of the hardest lessons I have had to face.  One aspect of my autoimmune condition was rooted in these self-destructive habits.

Making and keeping promises to myself has been one of the most powerful things I’ve done.

When you begin to believe in yourself, stop negotiating with yourself about the promises you’ve made, and if you don’t give up on yourself, you’ll be amazed at what you can change about your body, health, and life.

Understanding that all the chatter my brain offers up all day long is just trying to keep me safe could have saved me so much shame and hesitation in life.

When you can recognize this chatter for what it is, you can thank your brain for trying to keep you safe and tell yourself to do that thing you’re hesitating about anyway.

My 5-week Spring Reset is a program I wish I had in my twenties.

No diet dogma or strict plan to try and white-knuckle my way through.

It’s an understanding of how to eat to support energy, ditch cravings, and maintain muscle.

Here’s what most people never connect.

Your body isn’t getting the consistent support it needs.

Most people have been taught to approach nutrition by restricting, cutting things out, or trying to follow a plan perfectly.

When you start giving your body the right support, everything begins to shift.

You start to notice:

  • steady energy throughout the day
  • less joint pain
  • your clothes fitting better without obsessing over the scale
  • feeling confident, capable, and at home in your body again

The simple system for fueling your body without complicated dieting or overhauling your life is what makes this work.

Inside the reset, you’ll learn how to:

  • build simple, balanced meals
  • support your energy throughout the day
  • reduce cravings and crashes
  • create a way of eating that actually fits your life

Because in just a few weeks, you could start to notice:

  • more steady energy during the day
  • fewer cravings and less food noise
  • clearer thinking and better focus
  • your clothes fit better

You stop running your life on caffeine and sugar.

Your body starts producing energy the way it’s designed to.

You think more clearly at work.

You feel more patient with the people you care about.

You have energy left at the end of the day—for a walk, dinner, or simply enjoying your life.

That’s the shift.

Midlife is a powerful transition, not an ending!
