Do GLP-1s work?
You may know that, in addition to being a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, I’ve been a certified pilates instructor for the past 20 years.
In April, I received an offer I couldn’t turn down to teach pilates for an exclusive members-only club.
I’m back in the studio, and honestly, I didn’t expect to enjoy it this much.
I love working with new clients and hearing what’s on their minds about all things related to staying healthy.
What I’ve noticed is that many of the women are on GLP-1s, also known as weight loss drugs.
I talked about it in detail here.
These women are visually very thin.
In my mind, they’re too thin.
I’ve talked about this before, but I think it’s worth saying again, regardless of whether you’re taking these drugs or thinking about it, being thin doesn’t mean you’re healthy.
These women are fixated on the number on the scale.
When I reminded them that the scale number doesn’t tell the whole story, they were curious as to why.
The club I work for has an InBody machine that measures your weight and percentages of lean muscle and body fat.
They all have low body fat AND low muscle mass.
Why is this a problem?
They’re in their early 40s.
You begin losing muscle in your 30s.
They’re headed towards menopause with low muscle mass.
Muscle helps to protect bone density.
You become more insulin resistant as you age.
Muscle is a glucose storage space.
You burn more calories when you have adequate muscle.
Here are some other issues I see with them using GLP-1 drugs.
They’re horribly constipated.
They have a bowel movement once a week.
This is a setup for SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth).
One of them said she eats like a child.
Meaning she eats crappy food like mac and cheese and corn dogs.
It means she’s lacking the nutrients she needs.
One of them ended up in the emergency room with kidney stones.
I realize these drugs aren’t going away.
We’ve now gone from body positivity to thin at any and all costs.
If you’re taking these drugs or wanting to lose weight, there’s a way to eat to preserve muscle and maintain your digestive health.
These ladies are seeing the short term results that they want - being thin.
Unfortunately, the bill will come due down the road as they head into menopause with low muscle mass and a gut that’s struggling from constipation.
If you or anyone you know is taking these drugs and having a similar experience, I can help you.
Do you shop at Costco? They've really upped their game when it comes to healthier food options. I made a video for you. Watch it here.
