Are your bones healthy?

weekly memo

May is Osteoporosis Awareness Month.

Most people don’t realize how much their gut health and blood sugar impact their bones.

Osteoporosis means your bones become weak and thin, so fragile that even a small fall can lead to a break.

Osteopenia is the warning sign before osteoporosis. It means your bones are starting to lose strength.

DEXA scans (which measure bone density) are usually recommended only after age 65; by then, it may be too late to prevent serious damage.

A few stats that should have us all paying attention:

  • 19% of women over 50 in the U.S. already have osteoporosis in their hips or spine
  • 1 in 3 women (and 1 in 5 men) over 50 will break a bone because of it
  • 300,000 adults are hospitalized each year for hip fractures, with 70% of them being women
  • Falls are the leading cause of injury-related death for adults over 65

I eat well.

I’ve strength trained four days a week for the past 23 years.

And I found out I had osteopenia after doing a DEXA scan.

I was told to take an expensive bone-building supplement.

But instead, I asked, "Am I even absorbing the nutrients I’m eating?"

Even though I was eating nourishing food, my gut wasn’t fully absorbing it.

Many women I work with are in the same place, doing “all the right things” and still struggling with energy, strength, or bone loss.

Your gut plays a huge role in bone strength:

  • It helps you absorb calcium, magnesium, and vitamin D
  • It produces compounds that support bone formation
  • It influences estrogen levels, which are critical in midlife

Your blood sugar matters too.

Chronic high blood sugar creates harmful compounds called AGEs, which make bones stiff, inflamed, and prone to fractures.

The solution is to eat whole, real foods.

Prioritize strength training.

Support your gut.

Balance your blood sugar.
