Consistency vs. Perfection

weekly memo

Consistency is behaving or acting in a similar way over time.

Perhaps that seems boring, but I promise you it is a powerful behavior.

Often, I find clients feel they need to be perfect with meals or exercise, or there’s no point.

The reality is you need to be consistent.

Do you eat well one day, and then the next day you throw in the towel?

Do you go for a walk sometimes, but talk yourself out of it on other days?

Do you wear the busy badge and put everything else ahead of eating well and moving your body?

We all want to have energy, feel good in our bodies, feel mentally sharp and focused, and yet nutrition and movement are often at the bottom of the priority list.

We show up inconsistently.

We’re busy, tired, don’t have time, don’t feel like it, can’t do it perfectly, so why bother.

In the year my Mom was dying, I decided to make and keep a promise to myself.

I had to find a way to prioritize my health so I could show up for her.

When you keep promises to yourself, you will improve your self-confidence.

You build self-trust.

I decided to make the promise that no matter what, I would go to the gym four days a week.

Every Sunday, I would look at my calendar and decide which days I would go.

Making that promise gave me so much freedom.

I’d decided to stop negotiating with myself.

The decision was made to be consistent.

Was every workout my best effort?

No, it wasn’t.

But I showed up.

I stayed consistent.

It saved my mental health in a year that was so emotionally difficult.

People at the gym have made comments that I’m always at the gym.

My response to them is that I’ve committed to working out four days a week.

I don’t negotiate with myself.

Our gym is using a new app for check-in, and I was shocked when it said I’d made 535 visits since 2022.

Consistency has paid off.

I hope you’ll consider making and keeping a promise to yourself.

Having the health you want doesn't happen in extreme diets or workouts.

It comes from consistent habits.

It can be as small as drinking a glass of water every morning.

Mark it on your calendar and watch the weeks go by where you stay consistent.

I’ll be curious to hear what else shifts in your life.
